The meteoric rise to fame of Susan Boyle as also made the song “I Dreamed a Dream” more famous than it has ever been before. Many people sadly had not even heard of ‘Le Miserable’ much less heard the operatic song sung by the character ‘Fantine.’

I too love the song, however when you actually listen to the words they are of someone who has lost hope in their dream, at least for a while, as so many are now listening to the song I would love to comment on the lyrics and what they mean to me. I would really love you to comment on your perception of this song and it’s lyrics too and your story of dreaming.

There was a time when men were kind
When their voices were soft
And their words inviting
There was a time when love was blind
And the world was a song
And the song was exciting
There was a time
Then it all went wrong

Did it really all go ‘wrong’ or was the universal well of inspiration tell her that she was dreaming a dream that was not aligned with her?

In life, many thoughts are born in the course of a moment, an hour, a day. Some are dreams, some visions. Often, we are unable to distinguish between them. To some, they are the same; however, not all dreams are visions. Much energy is lost in fanciful dreams that never bear fruit. But visions are messages from the Great Spirit, each for a different purpose in life. Consequently, one person’s vision may not be that of another. To have a vision, one must be prepared to receive it, and when it comes, to accept it. Thus when these inner urges become reality, only then can visions be fulfilled. The spiritual side of life knows everyone’s heart and who to trust. How could a vision ever be given to someone to harbor if that person could not be trusted to carry it out. The message is simple: commitment precedes vision. ~ High Eagle

I look back on my life and every time it ‘all went wrong’, I can clearly see that I was not living MY dream, more living up to the life expected by all around me and expecting that to make me happy.

The key to realizing a dream is to focus not on success but significance – and then even the small steps and little victories along your path will take on greater meaning. ~ Oprah Winfrey

It was only when it all went wrong that I was able to more clearly see and feel that I needed to be living a different life more in line with who I am.

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high
And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving
Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung, no wine untasted

But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
And they turn your dream to shame

When we are young we do live like this, as if we are not only invincible but that we can live without karma, without consequences for our actions. Now I do not believe in a God that punishes, however I do believe that we will eventually have to learn the lessons we came here to live, and experience at least for a while that learning as hardship very much along the line of “when I know better I will do better,” coming into alignment with our higher self does not have to be painful, in fact it can be so joyful that I often now become starry eyed and allow tears of pure joy to trickle down my face as I experience it.

All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible. ~ T. E. Lawrence

However as many of us are not taught the ‘truth’ of life and our own divinity these days we tend to all experience our ‘dark night of the soul’ as a wake up.

He slept a summer by my side
He filled my days with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came

And still I dream he’ll come to me
That we will live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather

I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I’m living
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream I dreamed.

This is where the song ends, it ends with no hope the dream has ended. What does this mean to you? For me this ending is one of great hope for now I know it is time to dream a new dream. I will dream a dream that is more in line with who I am, uniquely me in every way here to do the things only I can do, say the things only I can say and love only as I can love. Life does not kill your dream, your higher self instead allows you to stumble and perhaps even fall, as I did so that when you pick yourself up you can start out on a new path, better suited to your unique vision of you and your future.

Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart. Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, awakens.
Without leaps of imagination, or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning.

Take a good look at your dreams are they really working for you? Are you dreaming your dream or like so many dreaming a dream that really belongs to another? Dreaming is a personal thing and when you dream your dream, see your vision for your life it is an awakening like no other.

That is when you take the most important step of your life – that of aligning yourself with your truth, your passion and your dream.

Dream a little dream of – YOU!
