This presentation by Arto Joensuu, sums up the idea of conversational marketing. The idea that there are no consumers only people with whom we have a relationship of “interactive value creation” is like a breath of fresh air to hear.

A relationship where you do not talk ‘to’ customers but with them, and having listening as your greatest skill! Adding the fact that if we listen well we will be responding to the needs of the people we are in relationship with via social media. How is this different?

There is no real marketing involved! and certainly no advertising!! Invite your customers into a relationship where both of you hold real conversations on and off the topic of your business, where you get to know your community well enough to know what they really, really want. This is the new/old way to do business, back to a community style of adding value to each others lives – something I predicted three years ago would be the next paradigm jump and here it is.

Watch and enjoy!

  1. Annie, nice job. Arto Joensuu’s presentation creatively captures the current SEO, SMO SEM shift. Culturally, are we asking the pertinent questions? What does this do to small business? How are we changing our behaviors? Is this real progress or another form of thin veneer- fascination of new, new? Do the products empower the people? How?

  2. Well thought out comment Avery and thank you :) I agree on one side this kind marketing is so much more in the reach of small to medium business and yet it can be time consuming, so are we better off? Personally I would say yes, as there is education to be had on how to streamline this relationship marketing process and still stay true to the shift.

The legacy of doing business this way can only be a good thing to our world, a re-engagment of the ideals of community and connection which seem to be lacking right now could herald a return to a values based world.

As for whether this is all a facade, only time will tell, however I believe that if enough of us are authentically out there creating these relationships and gathering our communities together in this way it wil become a new paradigm.

The idea of adding value to peoples lives has always been at the heart of any good marketing, I agree we seem to have ‘lost the plot’ a bit with the early advent of internet marketing and that was a sad thing. The internet seemed like a great way to scam people without having to ‘face’ up to it as it seemed so anonymous, now however we are getting to know one another and as we do the charade of anonymity has been shattered to reveal the truth – that what we do online stays online as a testiment to who we are and how we have acted in the past. The onus is on us to authentically represent ourselves always.
