Do you know why you want to be successful?

Why your business is important?

Why your clients or customers want to purchase what you have to offer?

Why you feel passionate about what you do?

Why?

Knowing the why’s; the reasons that compel people to want what they want is so very important to success. Just a few weeks ago I was stating my case for not needing an iPad; another piece of tech to complicate my life, what on earth would anyone want one of those for, what can it do that a laptop can’t do better – you know that kind of thing.

Then during a meeting with 4 people about doing social media for their company I was asked a question best answered by showing everyone at the table what I was talking about and that meant getting my laptop out or moving everyone to stand in front of one of the desk tops in one of their offices instead of staying in the board room where we were all quite comfortable – trouble is with a laptop and 5 people some of them need to stand behind me to see what is being shown on the screen.

The director of the company happened to have an iPad and she brought it out and sat it flat on the table where everyone could see it – and I demonstrated my point with total ease for all, in fact we spent another 15 minutes using the iPad to answer their questions and I got the job. Now I know WHY I need an iPad and it is next on my list of purchases, complete conversion from “I don’t know why anyone would need one.” to “I absolutely have to have one.” all because I know why!

Do you know your why’s? If you don’t perhaps you are not completely sold on what you are doing, where you are going and what you want to do. If you don’t tell your clients or customers why they need you, perhaps that is why they are not buying what you have to sell?

It’s what people believe about something that impels a person to buy, they are buying an idea not a thing – it all comes back to the story about the toothbrush – they don’t need a toothbrush they want clean teeth! Why? Because they don’t like the idea of having their teeth rot or having to go to the dentist! Tell them why they need your toothbrush and they will buy it.
