I have recently been reading through some of the lost (or not so lost) Tesla Papers, he was a genius and his musings on life, science and the universe are still so relevant. Tesla was like Da Vinci, he had no limits to his thinking and saw the world we live in as infinitely wondrous, as do most of my heroes e.g. Einstein, Bohm, Da Vinci, Tesla, Merlin, Newton and more.
Like these other heroes of mine, they were far above their time in their thinking and even though we may find their knowledge was limited and science may prove them wrong on some counts, they were in my mind heroes because of their imagination and scope of their thinking. Most of all because they were not afraid to be seen as nonconformists, radicals and different – now those are heroes!
For those of you who do not really know who Tesla was let me enlighten you:
Aside from his work on electromagnetism and electromechanical engineering, Tesla contributed in varying degrees to the establishment of robotics, remote control, radar and computer science, and to the expansion of ballistics, nuclear physics, and theoretical physics. In 1943, the Supreme Court of the United States credited him as being the inventor of the radio.
Some of Tesla’s More Notable Inventions:
- *Practial Radio (he first demonstrated an apparatus for radio transmission and reception in 1893 during a lecture presentation in St. Louis before the National Electric Light Association). This was fully 11 years before Marconi’s first wireless patent. The US Supreme Court finally ruled in Tesla’s favor (posthumously) in “Tesla v. Marconi”, Case 369, in June, 1944
- Tesla invented Polyphase electric power – all present day polyphase systems stem from Tesla’s genius! (No it wasn’t Edison or Westinghouse)
- Niagara Falls was the site of the world’s first commercial three-phase AC power plant; the nameplates on the massive generators bore the name of Tesla. It transmitted AC power to Buffalo, NY. It was Tesla who set the 60 Hz standard for North America while working for Westinghouse.
- Tesla invented brushless synchronous and induction motors. All present-day induction motors trace back to Tesla.
- Tesla bladeless turbine and pump
- Wireless electric power transmission concepts
- Wireless Remote Control (Tesla demonstrated a wireless controlled boat 1898!)
- Disinfectant Treatment of Water with Ozone
- Fluorescent Lighting (Tesla lit his lab with these 40 years before they became commercially available!)
- Synchronous electromechanical rectification of high voltages
- Gas-Tube rectification and rectification via corona discharge (foundation of Xerography)
- X-Rays (3 Years before Roentgen re-discovered them!)
Nikola Tesla was granted 221 Patents worldwide, including 113 US Patents
Back to Tesla, the papers I have most recently been reading through is a paper on increasing the energy of man. A fascinating insight into some of Tesla’s philosophy of man, some of the conclusions he came to way back when this kind of science was still in its infancy are truly amazing. I would love to share his ideas with you and my more modern take on them. Be prepared this is going to be a 4 part series as this is quite a lot of material and information to expound upon. But I know that many of you will find it useful.
Through scientific reasoning Tesla came up with three definitive ways he believed that man could increase his energy. Now you need to know he was talking both about man as one person and mankind as a whole in these papers, so please remember this.
Tesla on the three ways to increase the energy of man: “The first way.. is to increase the mass (as indicated by the dotted circle), leaving the two opposing forces the same. The second way is to reduce the retarding force R to a smaller value r, leaving the mass and the impelling force the same, as diagrammatically shown in the middle figure. The third way, ..is to increase the impelling force f to a higher value F, while the mass and the retarding force R remain unaltered.”
When reading this excerpt I immediately connected it to my NLP training and saw in this the elements of the beginnings of a scientific approach to personal development. The *rules of motivation (or energy of forward movement) in NLP are:
1. Forward movement initiated by moving toward your goal; “I want more..”, “I really want this..”
2. Forward movement initiated by moving away from a condition no longer wanted; “I am sick and tired of this…”, “I don’t want this to happen.” and
3. Forward movement initiated by moving toward your goal while releasing old blocks and limitations and no longer resisting what is; “I change my perception of the world around from one of being a helpless victim of events in my life to one of being the creator and therefore responsible for how I react to what happens and how I respond to it. I use each event in my life whether in the past or the future to be a teaching moment and no longer allow events in the past or now to inhibit my forward momentum. I live now as if all my goals have been achieved; living in a way that acknowledges where I am, while allowing my heart to soar to where I choose to be.”
This is my interpretation of what Tesla was saying about the science of forward momentum as pertains to human energy. The wonderful image that he drew to illustrate these ideas is really an mathematical algorithm of which any physicist would be proud.
Over the next few posts I would like to explore in more detail some of these ideas and see what we can learn about life from one of the scientific geniuses of our time.
*Note: this is a simplistic explanation of NLP for the purposes of this post.
